speak, lord!
Positioning Your Heart to Hear Him
God gives some of us visions, but He gives me visuals.
Last Saturday, I had the sweetest opportunity to sit with an elderly friend of mine, Audrey. She’s over 90 now. She was the mother of my best friend in high school, but truly, she became my “other mother.” We went to church together for decades. Back then she was already hard of hearing, which made it incredibly convenient for two teenage girls to whisper everything in her presence—everything teenage girls think is the end of the world.
Today, Audrey has lost most of her hearing and most of her sight. Her world has grown smaller, and she spends most days inside her home. Yet somehow, she remains one of the most content, peaceful women I know.
During my visit, we reminisced, talked about life, and shared dinner. She sits at the end of the table so guests can sit on her left side, her “hearing ear.” She also keeps a little portable light beside her plate so she can see her food more clearly. There we sat—just the two of us—eating, talking, and soaking up the moment.
The visual didn’t hit me until the next morning at church.
God used the memory of Audrey adjusting her position so she could hear me, and turning on the light so she could see, to speak something simple but profound to my heart.
Isn’t this exactly how God speaks to us?
Am I positioning myself so I can hear Him?
Am I sitting still long enough to whisper, “Speak, Lord, I am listening”? (1 Samuel 3:10)
Am I opening His Word so the Holy Spirit can illuminate it like a lamp—giving me those “light bulb” moments?
Am I quieting my soul so I can “be still and know” He is God? (Psalm 46:10)
Am I sitting still long enough to whisper, “Speak, Lord, I am listening”?
During Christmas especially, we get swept into the whirlwind of wrapping, planning, cooking, gifting, cleaning, and hosting. Noise everywhere. Light everywhere. Motion everywhere. But in all the brightness and busyness, we often miss the Light we need most.
We can’t control every demand this season brings, but we can choose to sit down, position ourselves toward His voice, and turn our hearts toward His light.
Where is the place that helps you hear Him?
What do you need to turn off—or turn away from—to listen again?
Friend, purpose in your heart this week to take a seat, slow your breathing, still your soul, and say with sincerity…
“Speak, Lord. I am listening.”
